Project Description
Downtown Day Services Center
Client: Department of Interior Design
Overview:
Since February 2019, the BID has proudly operated the Downtown Day Services Center. The purpose of the Center is to measurably reduce the number of homeless individuals on the street, providing daytime support and services for individual adults (aged 21 years and older) experiencing homelessness in order to promote self-sufficiency, wellness, recovery, and employment, with the end goal being permanent housing and stability.
The Center operates under three core actions:
- Ongoing outreach to connect with individuals living outdoors.
- Case management for individuals throughout the process required to secure permanent housing.
- Meeting individuals’ basic, daily needs to support their progress toward becoming housed.
When unhoused guests register for services at the Center, they meet with a case manager to assess their eligibility for housing, employment, medical, and other needs as identified during the visit. Unhoused guests who seek respite are allowed access to the Center’s garden area to enjoy a safe space for food and beverages.
Our interior concept for the Downtown Day Services Center was to create a cozy environment offering comprehensive support with a single point of access. The center offers modern shower facilities, drinking fountains, kitchens, restrooms, a laundry room, a TV lounge, and a meeting hall with plenty of comfortable seating. Services include housing assessment, assistance in obtaining vital records, health care, harm reduction, computer access, social work, behavioral health, legal assistance, and employment support. MOYA worked hard to deliver top-quality interiors to house these essential services. With the healing power of nature in mind, our interiors, visual design, and branding teams collaborated on a garden-inspired environment with texts promoting themes of well-being. The center is brimming with natural light and greenery.
Contemporary grays and taupes, clean white subway tile, and eco-friendly wood finishes combine with welcoming environmental graphics and custom wayfinding to provide a calm, bright atmosphere for health, support, and self-care. Substantial completion: February 2019.
