Project Description

William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library

Client: District of Columbia Public Library

Overview:The William O. Lockridge/Bellevue Library was a new, modern and dynamic 3-story community library, consisting of sharp concrete columns and a uniquely shaped building footprint. Pavilions dedicated to activities for children, teens and adults adjoin the main building in much the same way as porches and additions articulate the scale of the adjoining homes. The forward – looking design creates multiple indoor and outdoor gathering spaces to foster community. The environmentally-friendly design is a LEED Silver project. The interior is made up of large open spaces, mostly exposed architectural concrete with a substantial amount of interior glazing, including a glass 3-story atrium and glass elevator shaft. The unique spaces of the library include a Children’s Story Room; a 100-person community room, a new outdoor patio, two conference rooms and four quiet study rooms. The project utilized the participation of over 50% CBE companies.

Blue Skye Construction and Coakley & Williams completed this project in a Mentor-Protégé arrangement. Blue Skye Construction served as Protégé Contractor for the project.
